It needs work, it’s got body rust, it’s in another state, it’s slow but I want it.

I’ve always liked the fintail Mercs and I’m also interested in the fact that they were built in Australia.

These are incredible, especially with the vertical speedometer. You really don’t need to be worried about speed though. If you are turning onto a highway in Melbourne you need to make sure nothing’s coming your way from Perth.

You’ve never seen most cars made before 1973-ish? It’s not exactly advertised, but most blocks that didn’t have hardened seats needed leaded gas, or else they would have needed valve jobs and/or re-seating more often. Yes, you can run non-leaded gas in them, but that’s like running 87 octane when your car requirements state 91 octane or better.

i guess i haven’t. so was the improvement in manufacturing of the heads and valve seats?

and is leaded gasoline on its own worse for the environment (or something) than unleaded? any risk of lead poisoning?

just wondering what the sequence of events was.

Yes, leaded gas is terrible for the environment and people. My parents remember the news covering gas stations’ underground storage tanks being the big polluters in local communities, but a quick online research shows that exhaust was the main polluter. The EPA declared the lessening of lead in fuel in ‘73, but the actual banning wasn’t until the 90’s.

A comparison of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1976 and 1991 shows lead content in US citizens’ bloodstreams dropped to a fifth of the old level.

Ford started putting induction hardened seats in about ’74. Hardened seat inserts have always been a thing for any sort of engine of the Big Three that have been used in trucks, since propane and other ‘dry’ natural gas conversions were popular (My dad did conversions in the late 70’s and 80’s).
